State Police Rank Description

Recruit New Mexico State Police recruits are required to complete an INTENSIVE para-military 22 week academy in Santa Fe. While in school, recruits will receive 1160 hours of instruction in over 80 subjects, including law, firearms, driving, officer survival, and many more. Recruits are paid an hourly wage of $16.00 and on average are required to work more than an eight hour day. Room and board are provided and long hours are compensated with overtime pay at 1 1/2 times the normal rate.
Patrolman Patrolmen must be willing to accept assignment anywhere in New Mexico and must serve a two year probationary period. Patrolmen are responsible for a wide spectrum of law enforcement functions within their areas of responsibility. Officers are likely to work in traffic enforcement, as well as, criminal law enforcement.
Senior Patrolman Promotion to Senior Patrolman is automatic, provided the officer’s performance evaluations are satisfactory. Duties are the same as those of Patrolman, although Senior Patrolmen are often assigned greater responsibility in preparation for promotion to supervisory ranks.
Sergeant Sergeants are the first-line supervisors and are responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of Patrolmen. Typically, each sergeant is responsible for 5-10 patrolmen. Officers must serve at least 5 years as a Patrolman (Junior & Senior combined) to be eligible for promotion to Sergeant and must succeed in a competitive promotional process.
Lieutenant Lieutenants are the first of the command level ranks. Ordinarily, lieutenants are considered patrol commanders in the field – they supervise sergeants and patrolmen and report to a district commander, who is a captain. Officers must complete at least two years as a sergeant before being eligible for promotion to lieutenant and must succeed in a competitive promotional process. Lieutenants and higher ranks are not eligible to collect overtime pay.
Captain Captains are the highest ranking field officers and usually are assigned as district commanders. The captain is responsible for every aspect of a district or area, from public relations to enforcement strategies. The captain supervises one or more lieutenants, several sergeants, numerous patrolmen, and civilian employees. Officers must successfully complete at least two years as lieutenants before being eligible for promotion to captain. Captains are appointed by the Chief.
Major The New Mexico State Police has a variable number of majors, each of which are responsible for overseeing a substantial portion of the department. Major is the first of the ‘exempt’ ranks, meaning they serve at the pleasure of the Chief. All majors are stationed at our headquarters in Santa Fe.
Deputy Chief There are usually one or two deputy chiefs within our department. They oversee all uniform operations and are responsible for investigative units. The deputy chiefs are appointed by the Chief and serve at his pleasure.
Chief The Chief of the New Mexico State Police is appointed by the Secretary of the New Mexico Department of Public Safety and must be confirmed by the state senate. He is responsible for every aspect of operations and also serves as the DPS Deputy Secretary of Operations.
